Selected Photos from 1978 - 2013

mondavi
Michael Mondavi and I at the Robert Mondavi Winery in 1978. Michael and his dad used to unabashedly serve La Tache side by side with their Pinot Noir Reserve, and Chateau Haut Brion next to their Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve to show that they were in the same league as the very best. They were!
1983
I was honored to attend an incredible dinner with Corinne Mentzelopoulos (center), owner of Chateau Margaux, and the brilliant wine consultant Emile Peynaud (right), in 1983 in Houston.
Burgundy
Our dear friends Susan and Ed Auler (far left and left), owners of Fall Creek Winery and founders of the modern Texas wine industry, with my wife and I after a delightful meal in 1995 at the Auberge du Vignes outside of Beaune, Burgundy.
Oporto
After a fabulous luncheon in 2006 at the Taylor Fladgate offices in Villa Nova de Gaia, Marijo and I pose with Alastair Robertson, current owner and president of the 300-year-old family firm. The city of Oporto appears in the background.
Catena
Nicolas Catena (left), the “Robert Mondavi of Argentina” and the author at the 130-year-old Catena Family Estancia in Mendoza in October 2010.
2011
On the patio in 2011 at Artisans of Barossa with possibly the greatest winemaker in Australia, John Duval (right). His Plexis (Rhone-style) and Entity (Shiraz) are two of the greatest “under-$40” wines in the world. We sampled the 2008s, which are substantial, luscious and unrivaled in that price range.
denman-and-piero-antinori
With Piero Antinori, 26th generation owner of Tuscany’s Villa Antinori at his Antica Napa Estate in 2013.
